Core Maths

Why Core Maths?

Core Maths is a new qualification aimed at students who would like to continue to develop their understanding of how maths is applied in the real world.

Core Maths involves building skills in modelling and interpreting solutions in context of a real life problem, personal finance, working with data and understanding risk in probability. You can expect to analyse data, including using spreadsheets and graphing software, to solve meaningful everyday mathematical problems.

The course builds your employable skills for sectors such as finance, management, analysis, modelling and would support studies in A-Level Geography, Biology, Psychology, Business studies, Economics, Sociology, Chemistry, Physics, History and Politics.

What do I need to know?

Exam board: We study AQA Level 3 Mathematical Studies.

Entry Requirements: We would like you to have achieved grade 5 in GCSE Maths.

Pathways: There are two pathways to Core Maths. The first is by studying BTEC Engineering, as the two courses complement each other. The other is to chose Core Maths alongside your three A-Level subjects as an 'extra' subject instead of Academic Enrichment. If you choose this pathway, the Core Maths course will last for two years, just like your other subjects.
